Opening a bank account in Peru as a tourist – Challenges and solutions

If you are in the process of applying for a visa in Peru — especially the Rentista Visa — you may be required to open a local bank account before you can even submit your visa application.

However, opening a bank account in Peru without a residency permit is extremely difficult without professional assistance.

Why you need a bank account for your visa application

For certain visa types, particularly the Rentista Visa, proof of regular income is required. Immigration authorities expect you to show an international transfer of funds into a Peruvian bank account.
Without this first transfer, you cannot fulfill one of the essential requirements for your visa application.

While not strictly mandatory for all visa types, having a Peruvian bank account offers important advantages, such as facilitating payment of fees and receiving future income locally.

Opening a bank account is always included in our comprehensive immigration service packages.

Challenges of opening a bank account without residency

Technically, it is possible to open a bank account using only your passport, provided you can present:

  • A valid tourist visa (not expired)

  • A Peruvian address (proof of residence)

  • A Peruvian phone number

  • A permission to sign contracts (permiso para firmar contratos)

However, the reality is very different:
Bank employees are often unwilling to process bank account applications from foreigners without a Carné de Extranjería.
Even with all the required documents, individual branches may impose additional restrictions, delays, or simply deny your request without clear explanation.

Many clients report multiple failed attempts at different bank branches, resulting in lost time and frustration.
