Rentista ("Retirement") Visa for Peru

The Rentista Visa is a popular long-term residence option for individuals who can demonstrate a stable passive income from abroad. It is commonly used by retirees, but it is not limited to people of retirement age. Unlike other visas, it does not allow formal employment or local freelance work in Peru, but it is ideal for those living off pensions, rental income, investments, or similar sources.

Who can apply for a rentista visa?

This visa is suitable for:

  • Retirees receiving a pension

  • Individuals with steady passive income (e.g. from rental properties, dividends, or annuities)

  • Remote investors or financially independent individuals looking to settle in Peru

Important: The income must come from outside of Peru and be guaranteed and recurring.

Requirements

To qualify for the Rentista Visa, you’ll need to show:

  • A minimum monthly income of USD 1,000 (net)
→ This amount must come from a guaranteed source outside Peru

  • Official documents proving your income (e.g. pension statements, bank records)

  • Criminal background check from your home country

  • Proof of legal entry into Peru (entry stamp or TAM virtual)

  • Additional documentation depending on your nationality and income type

All foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish by a certified translator.

Process and timeline

  1. Gather documents
Some documents must be requested in your home country — we’ll help you plan ahead.

  2. Translate & legalize
All non-Spanish documents must meet Peruvian legal requirements.

  3. Submit application online
We handle this step and monitor the status for you.

  4. Wait for approval
Processing time is around 1 to 3 months, depending on Migraciones’ workload.

  5. Pick up your residence card (Carné de Extranjería)

The visa is valid indefinitely, but you must not spend more than 183 consecutive days outside Peru, or you risk losing your residency.
